Art of Couple and Relationship Counselling

Introducing both the skills and theory underlying a successful practice in Couple Counselling this five weekend program aims to allow graduates to develop the practical skills and theoretical underpinnings of a range of models in couple therapy.

Doug Sotheren brings the summation of forty-five years of working with couple relationships and the journey through the many models of relationship counselling that have emerged over that time.

Beginning with experiential exercises that explore the nature of the “Between” the reality of the bi-personal field that emerges when two people enter into committed relationship. Doug will demonstrate basic patterns of skills in making connection with each partner and the relationship, and his method of shaping all interventions to create a relational focus.

The group will then explore a range of theoretical models that may be used to inform couple counselling practice. Alongside of these models participants will practice with video feedback the base skills in couple counselling and the ways in which these are shaped by the use of the theories of choice.

Participants will have the opportunity to briefly review the following theories that can be included within the couple counselling meta-model presented: Attachment, Object Relations, Marital Contract, Narrative, Couples Developmental, Multi-generational Family Systems, Couples Communication, Somatic and Narrative models. Techniques from these models will also be explored.

The weekends will be in workshop format with use of structured exercises, demonstrations, and practice of skills. The theoretical components of the workshop will be covered by the provision of handouts so that the majority of the workshop time can be experiential and interactive.

We need a good mix of males and females to attend the workshops.
